SKU: F5/14
A rare and historically fascinating Webley Model 1922 semi-automatic pistol, chambered in 9mm Browning Long (9x20mm SR) and manufactured in 1926 for the South African Union Defence Force (UDF).
Originally prototyped around 1920, the Model 1922 emerged following the South African UDF's search for a new military sidearm. Webley's design reportedly offered a considerable cost advantage over the Luger, and an initial order for 1,000 pistols was placed – making this example one of that original 1,000-pistol UDF contract.
Sometimes referred to as the “African Model”, the Model 1922 remained a distinctly limited-production Webley. Total production up to 1929 amounted to approximately 1,900 pistols, making surviving examples an unusual and desirable part of both Webley and South African military firearms history.
The pistol is chambered for 9x20mm SR / 9mm Browning Long, a lower-powered cartridge than 9mm Parabellum which allowed Webley to employ a comparatively straightforward unlocked breech / blowback design. The pistol is also fitted with a magazine safety.
The left-hand side carries Webley's name and address, together with “9mm Automatic Pistol” and the famous Webley Flying Bullet logo. The right-hand side bears the important South African UDF markings, providing a direct visual link to the pistol's original military contract.
Finished with chequered grips and a lanyard ring, this example retains a stunning original blued finish and presents exceptionally well.
A genuinely scarce and beautiful piece of Webley history, representing one of the company's most interesting interwar military automatic pistol designs.
Offered for the appropriate Section 7(3) or Section 5 authority.
